Mosgiel and the Taieri have a long and strong history of providing high quality education. An example is East Taieri School that is one of Otago and New Zealand's earliest schools. In 1853 it was opened as a preaching station! The school itself opened in 1865.
The there are six schools in Mosgiel.
The first school in Mosgiel was in High Street. It was opened in 1874 by Arthur Burns who owned and operated the local woollen mill. He wanted the children of his employees to be able to attend school. Although it closed in 1885 the building is still in use, not as a school but as a private residence.

Publicly available roll sizes for the six schools (available from www.education.govt.nz) only indicate statistics for July 2014.
